Top Republican figures are pushing back against callouts from tech executives to curb artificial intelligence progress, arguing that slowing down could jeopardize America’s economic and technological dominance over Beijing. Former President Donald Trump dismissed concerns from Silicon Valley leaders as an exaggeration, emphasizing the crucial need to maintain the American advantage in high-tech innovation. Speaking with the Financial Times, Trump stated, “Look, we’re leading China in AI … and, frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI, wins.” He warned that any hesitation by domestic innovators would effectively hand global supremacy in advanced computing to geopolitical adversaries.

Echoing these concerns, House Speaker Mike Johnson cautioned against hasty government intervention during an appearance on CNN with host Jake Tapper. The congressional leader advised the public to remain calm while describing potential legislative restrictions as a “national security threat.” Johnson argued that immediate regulatory action could yield disastrous consequences for domestic progress. He asserted, “If Congress just races in and does some sort of emergency session to try and regulate AI, we will lose the race to China.”

This political resistance follows a prominent request from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who released a detailed public statement advocating that researchers “pace the frontier” of machine learning systems. That call for caution received swift backing on X from OpenAI head Sam Altman alongside xAI founder Elon Musk. Alphabet’s Demis Hassabis also expressed measured approval for Amodei’s recommended slowdown. Despite this rare alignment among prominent industry figures, Washington’s top political strategists remain steadfast in their belief that halting momentum poses far too great a geopolitical risk.
