The company announced the Series E on Monday, with Andreessen Horowitz and Accel leading as new investors.
Founders Fund, General Catalyst and Avenir returned. The syndicate also includes T. Rowe Price, DST, Bain Capital Ventures and NVIDIA. Do the division Cognition raised over $1bn at $26bn in May. That round reported run-rate revenue of $492m.
The new round reports almost $900m. Both prices work out at roughly 53 times run-rate revenue. Investors did not pay a higher multiple. They paid the same multiple for twice the revenue.
Why that is the interesting number Bubble arguments usually turn on multiple expansion. Paying more per unit of revenue is what late-cycle behaviour looks like. That is not what happened here. The re-rating tracked the business, at least on the company’s own figures.
Fifty-three times revenue is still extraordinary. The point is that it was extraordinary in May too. The figures are unaudited and self-reported Run-rate revenue is not audited revenue. It annualises a recent period, so a strong month becomes a headline number.
Cognition is private and publishes what it chooses. No filing obliges it to reconcile these figures. TNW has not independently verified the revenue growth. Every number here comes from the company.
NVIDIA sits on both sides NVIDIA is in the round. It is also named as a Devin customer, using the product in chip design. That pattern is now routine. NVIDIA has committed more than $40bn to AI equity positions this year. Investing in your customers is not improper.
It does make revenue quality harder to assess from outside. The pattern runs through this cycle. Capital and customer relationships increasingly travel together in AI infrastructure. The comparable is right next door Cursor sits at almost exactly the same price. It has been raising $2bn at a $50bn valuation. Two AI coding companies, both around $50bn, both raising $2bn.
The category is being priced as a duopoly. Buyers have circled too. SpaceX approached Cognition days after its Cursor deal. What Cognition says it sells now Devin has moved beyond writing code on request. Auto-Triage takes a first pass at incidents, Security Swarm finds and triages vulnerabilities, and Automations trigger work from Slack, GitHub and Linear.
The company calls this the dawn of the self-driving software era. In its telling, engineers become architects who set goals while agents execute. Named customers include GE Aerospace, Citi, Mercedes-Benz and Modal. The Series D also listed Goldman Sachs, Dell, Santander, the US Army and the US Navy.
The proof point is the company itself Cognition’s most cited claim is about its own engineering. It said in May that around 90% of code committed by its engineers was committed by Devin. That is a genuine signal and a self-referential one. A company selling engineering automation is the easiest possible customer for engineering automation. It is also unverifiable from outside.
Nobody else can see the commit history. What would change the picture Watch whether the multiple holds at the next round. A flat multiple through two doublings is discipline; an expanding one on slowing growth is not. Watch customer concentration too.
Run-rate revenue built on a few large enterprise deals behaves differently from revenue spread across thousands. And watch the offices. Cognition opened in Washington, Tokyo, Singapore, London, São Paulo and Madrid this year, which is a cost base that assumes the growth continues.
