Credit: Nexo Nexo, a premier digital assets wealth platform, today published “The Future of Digital Wealth 2026” report. The main finding shows operational friction, not conviction, is the biggest barrier keeping high-net-worth investors in the U.S., U.K., and Argentina from building real wealth with crypto. The report also debuts the Crypto Integration Index (CII). It is a new 1-to-10 measure of how deeply crypto is embedded in an investor’s financial life, beyond ownership.
What the Crypto Integration Index measures The CII combines five equally weighted dimensions into a single composite score: allocation size, holding horizon, retirement integration, substitution from traditional assets, and risk perception. Two-thirds of affluent investors surveyed (~67%) already hold crypto, yet the average CII score is just 4.83. That indicates most are exposed to crypto, but not yet building wealth with it. The gap is not about conviction.
Just under 20% of respondents already expect crypto to be their number-one personal wealth driver over the next decade, ahead of salary, equities, and real estate. Yet more than 40% are already invested, but not yet building wealth with it. “Once an investor gets past the risk perception stage, what’s left is security, fees, and platform user-friendliness and capabilities, the same things we’ve spent years building Nexo to solve,” said Neil Steinhardt, COO, Nexo US. “That’s the gap between owning crypto and actually building wealth with it, and it’s exactly where our platform is designed to meet investors.” A score near the survey average of 4.83 describes a small, short-horizon position that sits outside retirement planning. A score of 7 or higher, reached by just 4.7% of investors surveyed, describes a long-held position that has replaced a traditional asset. It is treated as part of long-term financial planning. “Risk perception used to be the story in every crypto adoption survey.
It isn’t anymore,” said Iliya Kalchev, analyst at Nexo. “In our data, risk perception barely separates investors who’ve built real wealth with crypto from those who haven’t. What actually divides them is whether they’ve substituted crypto for a traditional asset and folded it into retirement planning. For affluent investors it’s the planning and the smoothness of operating with that crypto that remains to be resolved.” Other findings “The Future of Digital Wealth 2026” also surfaced several other notable findings: Ownership and integration diverge by market. Argentina leads on ownership (74%) but trails on integration depth (CII 4.62).
The U.S. has the lowest ownership (62%) but the deepest integration (CII 5.07). The U.K. sits in between (CII 4.75, 65% ownership). Integration peaks among 35 to 44 year-olds, 28% of whom treat crypto as a core retirement asset. Meanwhile, investors 18 to 25 report the highest ownership and conviction.
Over 90% hold crypto, but only 2% hold a 10-year-plus horizon. Among “Structurally Integrated” investors (CII 7+), reported friction shifts toward platform trust. Security concerns (36%), high fees (34%), and platform complexity (28%) top the list. Methodology The research platform Attest fielded the survey in February and March 2026.
It covered 1,000 affluent investors in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. Respondents needed a minimum of $100,000 in liquid assets in the U.S. and U.K., or $40,000 in Argentina. These thresholds capture the top 25% to 30% of each market by investable wealth.
