However, figures within the organization harbor anxiety regarding potential backlash from forthcoming fossil fuel choices. Industry observers expect ministers to grant approval for the Jackdaw gasfield as early as next week, whereas a determination on the contentious Rosebank oilfield will reportedly be postponed until after the vote.
The upcoming Holborn and St Pancras byelection on 8 October was triggered earlier this month when former prime minister Keir Starmer announced his departure from parliament. Seeking to build upon progress achieved during May’s local elections, Green Party leader Zack Polanski officially launched his candidacy for the vacant position. Although he readily acknowledges that his movement enters the contest as underdogs, he maintains strong confidence in overcoming the ruling party. Polanski insists that recent municipal progress indicates a growing appetite among electors for political change.
To secure his place on the ballot, Polanski had to overcome an internal challenge from Hamza Chowdhury, one of the party’s own local representatives. During the nomination selection process, Chowdhury argued against selecting “another MP who arrives during an election campaign” only to end up as someone who “disappears once the votes are counted”.
