Rooted in an August 2022 gas station attack in Los Angeles, the federal prosecution asserted that Durk Devontay Banks organized a hit against rival musician Tyquian Bowman, known professionally as Quando Rondo. Although Bowman emerged unharmed from the barrage, his relative Saviay’a Robinson suffered fatal gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. Authorities stated that the 33-year-old hip-hop star sought retribution following the 2020 slaying of King Von, an artist signed to Banks’s label who died during an Atlanta gunfight. Government attorneys alleged that online criticism prompted Banks to broadcast his intention to “pay a bounty” for Bowman’s execution.
Following three days of deliberations concluding a three-week courtroom proceeding, a federal jury on Friday cleared the music artist on all five felony charges, which included conspiracy and murder for hire resulting in death. Fans gathered outside the Los Angeles venue erupted in celebration upon learning that Banks had avoided a potential life imprisonment sentence. Defense attorney Drew Findling remarked that the performer felt “thankful” in the wake of the exoneration.
Despite his full acquittal in this proceeding, Banks will remain incarcerated as he prepares for a separate legal battle scheduled for 5 October involving firearms offenses and racketeering murder. Government officials expressed their intent to proceed with the upcoming litigation regardless of Friday’s outcome. “While we are disappointed with the jury’s decision regarding Durk Banks, a.k.a. ‘Lil Durk,’ we look forward to presenting our evidence at his second trial”, declared First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli in an official statement.
Two individuals tried alongside Banks, Deandre “OTF Dede” Wilson and David “Browneyez” Lindsey, received guilty verdicts for stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking, though both were exonerated of murder-for-hire allegations. The government’s case relied heavily on testimony from three former associates—Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant, Keith “Flacka” Jones, and Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester—who secured plea bargains to testify against the defendants. Although a companion of Bowman was initially charged regarding King Von’s death, those allegations were subsequently dropped, and Bowman himself was never arrested.
Beyond his legal troubles, Banks established his OTF collective in 2010 and built a massive commercial music career. Since 2019, he has secured seven projects within the top five spots of the US Billboard chart and teamed up with industry giants such as Drake. His chart-topping track “All My Life,” featuring J Cole, earned him the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance alongside three other career nominations for the prestigious honor.
