Instacart says AI-built carts beat its $115 average basket. Shipt shipped the same feature and called it relief from mental load.

Ask Shipt turns a plain-language request into a filled cart at a chosen retailer. Credit: Shipt Shipt and Instacart both launched AI assistants that build a grocery cart from a prompt or a photo on 9 September. Instacart said orders placed through its assistant contain more items than a typical order and exceed its $115 average basket, while Shipt’s announcement gives no equivalent figure and frames the product as relief from mental load. Neither company says whether paid placements can enter an assistant-built cart, or whether a shopper would be told.

Shipt launched Ask Shipt on 9 September, an assistant in its app that turns a prompt, a recipe or a photo of a meal into a cart. Instacart released Clementine the same day, which does the same job. The Shelby Report set the two launches side by side, noting Kroger had already put an assistant across all its banners in July. Conversational cart building is now the fastest-moving front in grocery delivery.

One company published the number Instacart said orders placed through Clementine contain more items than its typical order and come in above its $115 average basket. That is the commercial case for the product, stated plainly by the company selling it. Shipt’s announcement contains no equivalent figure. It describes the assistant as relief from decision fatigue and from the mental load of feeding a family.

Both framings can be true. An assistant that removes the effort of assembling twenty items also removes the friction that used to stop the twentieth going in. The question neither release answers Grocery platforms are advertising businesses. Sponsored placements are keyword-targeted to what a shopper types into a search bar, which is precisely the surface these assistants replace.

So the live question is whether a brand can pay to appear in a cart the assistant assembles. Neither company’s announcement addresses it, and neither says how a shopper would know if it happened. Shipt is an independently operated subsidiary of Target, which runs its own retail media business, Roundel. Instacart’s own enterprise marketing puts retail media at $69bn.

Why this is not a small omission A search bar puts the shopper in charge of the query and shows a labelled ad beside the result. An assistant chooses the items, and the reasoning for each choice sits inside a model. The FTC’s case against Amazon turns on exactly this gap, alleging the company described one set of auction rules while running another. Amazon’s defence is that its reserve prices were never predictable by anyone, including Amazon.

That case concerns advertisers, who at least have dashboards. A shopper handed a finished cart has no comparable way to audit it. The scale gap is wide Shipt reaches 80% of the US population through more than 100 retail partners. Instacart works with more than 2,200 retail banners covering close to 100,000 stores in North America.

Instacart is also selling the technology to rivals. Its white-label Cart Assistant is live at several grocers, with Aldi’s US business among those still to come. Shipt is hedging its bet, sensibly Three weeks before this launch, Shipt put shopping experiences inside ChatGPT and Claude. That is the opposite bet to building your own assistant.

One says the journey starts in a general assistant and Shipt is the fulfilment layer underneath. The other says the customer opens the Shipt app first. Running both is rational while nobody knows which wins. Amazon has already moved its assistant into the search bar, and Google is building a universal cart that spans its products. The cart is the contested object Every large platform is now trying to own the container rather than the catalogue. A court has already ruled on whether an outside agent may shop on somebody else’s storefront.

Shipt sits in an unusual position in that fight. It is a fulfilment layer for other retailers, a Target asset, and now a destination assistant competing with the ones it plugs into. Europe will ask the question first An assistant that assembles a basket is a recommender system with a checkout button attached. The European Commission is due to table its Digital Fairness Act, which covers personalisation and recommendation practices. Neither of these assistants is live in the EU, and Shipt does not operate there.

The rules will still shape what an AI cart builder has to disclose, because the firms designing them are building for a global market. Regulators on both sides of the Atlantic are already looking at interface design in shopping apps. A cart the shopper did not assemble is an interface question before it is an AI one. What would settle it The answer is one sentence from each company.

Do sponsored or otherwise paid placements enter assistant-built carts, and are they labelled when they do? Neither company has been asked it publicly, and neither has volunteered an answer. Until one does, the honest description is that nobody outside either company knows what is in the cart or why.
