The US citizenship test, administered by USCIS, has undergone significant changes since its origins as a purely oral examination in the 19th centuryKey legislation passed between 1940 and 1986 gradually introduced English language and American history requirements into the naturalisation processIn September 2026, USCIS announced it would resume using the 2020 version of the naturalisation civics test with certain modificationsPAY ATTENTION: Mark Legit.ng as a preferred source, and our content will appear higher in your Google feed! There are over 100 countries in the world, each with its own rules. While many of these countries have become economically advanced through policies that drive economic reforms, individuals from many parts of the world often migrate to such countries, and many wish to stay or live there permanently and eventually become citizens. The United States, often referred to as the US or America, is one of the top countries to which individuals from many other parts of the world migrate yearly, with the hope of getting a better life or obtaining citizenship.History of US citizenship test and 3 reasons why the exam matters to foreigners. Follow Legit.ng on Instagram! The naturalisation test is an exam administered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to evaluate an applicant’s English proficiency and basic knowledge of US history and government during the citizenship application process. In this article, Legit.ng looks at the history or origin of the US citizenship test and why it is important. How the US citizenship test startedAccording to USCIS, before the introduction of the written examination that applicants go through to claim US citizenship, the method was basically oral during the 19th and early 20th centuries, as judges often conducted the citizenship test orally by examining applicants.During that era, the process was primarily the responsibility of the courts.Information shows that judges mostly asked applicants questions about the duties of a citizen, the functions of government, and several other questions that could help determine whether an applicant qualified to become an American citizen.History of US citizenship test and 3 reasons why it matters in the naturalisation process. MacCormack, made major improvements to the process as he introduced policies that emphasised that the citizenship test was to be based on the applicant’s knowledge of the Constitution rather than the memorisation of facts.Later, in 1940, the US Congress included an English language requirement for the naturalisation process and introduced a method for questioning immigrants or aliens who applied for naturalisation.History of US citizenship test and 3 reasons why the exam is important to immigrants.

Applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, must answer at least 12 out of 20 oral questions correctly to pass the test.
