Jonathan Trott has committed to coaching the England Lions this winter on tours of West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka; Trott fills the void left by Andrew Flintoff standing down from the role in August; Trott won the Ashes three times during 52 Test appearances for England Jonathan Trott will coach the England Lions this winter, filling the role vacated by Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff stood down from the position with immediate effect in August, with Trott stepping in to lead the side’s recent T20 series win over the touring Sri Lanka side. Now the three-time Ashes winner, who previously enjoyed success as head coach of Afghanistan, has agreed to stay in post for next six months. Trott, 45, will oversee a white-ball tour of the West Indies starting on October 27, a trip to South Africa which runs until December 23 and a third leg in Sri Lanka running between February and March.
Trott was one of the names in the frame when England were looking for a new Test coach, a role which ultimately went to Stephen Fleming, having seen his stock rise by taking Afghanistan to a groundbreaking semi-final appearance at the T20 World Cup in 2024. He also completed a short consultancy stint with Ireland in July. “I’m delighted to be back working in the England set-up and hugely excited to take on the role of head coach of the England Lions,” he said. “Having played for the Lions myself, I know how valuable the experience can be in helping players develop, both on and off the field, and it played an important part in my own journey.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the players and staff, helping them fulfil their potential and preparing them for the demands of international cricket. Ed Barney, men’s performance director at the England and Wales Cricket Board, said: “Jonathan Trott is an outstanding coach who has a proven record in international cricket. We are delighted that he has agreed to lead our Lions programme during a busy winter.
