Credit: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com The Mozilla Foundation has begun putting up posters across New York criticizing tech billionaires, including Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. The campaign went up this week, Business Insider reported. The foundation is the nonprofit that owns Mozilla Corporation, the maker of Firefox.
Its posters set the work of Musk, Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos against projects from its own fellows. The aim is to draw attention to those fellows and get people to share the posters online. One of them is Rose Njeri Tunguru, a software developer based in Nairobi. As part of the Mozilla fellowship, she is building Open Elections Kenya.
The platform maps and checks data for each polling station ahead of Kenya’s 2027 elections. “What we really wanted to do was poke a hole in the mythology that tech innovation happens in one particular way,” Ziyaad Bhorat, Mozilla’s vice president of imagination and strategic growth, told Business Insider. The poster about Zuckerberg refers to Meta’s camera glasses, which some people have used to secretly film strangers and prank shop workers. “Mark gets into eyewear” and “makes creepers, peepers,” the poster reads. In July, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said the platform would remove videos of people being secretly filmed and harassed. In addition, a Meta spokesperson told Business Insider that the company disables the camera on glasses when the user removes the recording light.
Mozilla is using wild postings, where posters are stuck on walls and barriers rather than on billboards. Some posters are near the United Nations headquarters, where the General Assembly is meeting this week. Others are in Hudson Yards, NoHo and Dumbo, areas where many tech workers are based. Mozilla is also paying influencers to visit the sites and post about them on social media. “We know that this campaign will be a little bit provocative, and we’re hoping that then leads to more people sharing it and getting the message out,” Emma Bates, who advised Mozilla on the campaign, told Business Insider.
The campaign comes as many Americans are wary of AI. In a June survey by the Pew Research Center, 52% of US adults said they were more concerned than excited about it. Also tagged with
